After a dramatic drop in popularity in the late 1990s, the number of licensed anglers in the state has bounced back from a low of about 630,000 in 2000 to some 765,000 last year, and counting. Whether it's Olympic gold medalist and self-proclaimed "fish whisperer" Lindsey Vonn of Vail picking up a fly rod for the first time or the neighborhood kids dunking worms in a local pond, the allure is universal.
