How Close is Too Close? Get out of my Ice Fishing Space!

Image
Ice fishing season is upon us and the local lakes and ponds have a solid coating of ice on them.  With these great conditions come great fishing opportunities. These are opportunities that many anglers are sure to take advantage of. The winter ice season allows the angler to access many areas that they typically may not have an opportunity to fish.  Lakes that are typically resident only are open to the public and areas that those without a boat cannot get to can now reach these spots and are rewarded for their efforts. I am one of those “run and gun” type of fishermen.  It is not uncommon for me to drill over a dozen holes before I even get a line wet. These holes are often done on a search mission, however once I find the fish I will then proceed to drill another dozen to two dozen holes in a grid pattern so that I can hole hop as the fish move from one area to another. Now the question arises is; are these holes “my” holes?  This is a matter of opinion.  Yes I did drill th

Dumped fishing dhow still stuck in the sea

Dumped fishing dhow still stuck in the sea The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi said rotting debris from the dhow at Mina fishing port was a cause for concern to marine life and the environment. Ravindranath K / The National ABU DHABI // A 50-foot fishing dhow that sunk in the harbour at Mina Zayed more than five months ago has still not been moved. Parts of the vessel were still sticking up on Wednesday even though it had sunk further into the sea. Its bow section is still a foot above water. The dhow is close to the Abu Dhabi Fishermen Cooperative Society office, which said last month said it was unaware of the craft. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (Ead) said rotting debris from the dhow was a cause for concern to marine life and the environment, but it did not fall under the authority’s jurisdiction. “Ead is not in charge of port or waterway management,” said Ayesha Al Blooshi, terrestrial and marine biodiversity director at the authority. “Ead is only in charge of f

Trout fishing in Kansas? Yes, thanks to Missouri rainbows

Trout fishing in Kansas? Yes, thanks to Missouri rainbows (Photo: File photo) HUTCHINSON, Kan – . (AP) — Standing on the frozen Dillon Nature Center pond watching more than 600 trout from Ava, Missouri, pour into the frigid waters, Richard Potter tells it from his stomach’s point of view. “You know the saying — a hog farmer doesn’t eat pork,” he said. Not that it is really a saying, but Potter admits you can give him catfish or bass, but he really doesn’t care for trout. “I mess with them all day long,” he said, a job he has had for more than five years. And by the end of a day of hauling trout across the lower Midwest, he doesn’t want to see one on his dinner plate. Kansas, not fortunate to be graced with mountain streams, isn’t a mecca for trout. Moreover, the summers are too hot to sustain this species of fish all year long. Yet there are plenty of opportunities to find them each winter in several of the state’s waters thanks to the work of Potter and others who

Recreational Fishing Linked To Mediterranean Environmental Harm

Image
Up to 10% of adults living in developed countries fish for food and recreation and a new paper finds that in the Mediterranean Sea that could be up to 10% of the total production of fisheries - a large amount that is basically un-regulated outside buying a license.  The authors claim that in the Mediterranean the volume of fish taken out by recreational fishing can be equal or even greater than that of commercial fishing. The researchers made their determination using the results of 24 studies carried out in 15 marine areas in Spain (Tabarca and three areas of the Cap de Creus), France, Italy and Turkey and compared the different practices, such as the use of exotic bait and bottom fishing, as well as the environmental impact of the different types of recreational fishing: from a boat, from the shore and underwater.  A Lichia amia fish.
