A key witness at the trial of a lobster fisherman

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. -- A key witness at the trial of a lobster fisherman accused of killing another fisherman in Nova Scotia s ays he did not actually see the accused use a fishing gaff to drag the victim out to sea. Craig Landry testified Tuesday at the trial of his cousin and fellow fishing crew member Joseph James Landry, both of whom were aboard a boat called the Twin Maggies at the time Phillip Boudreau disappeared on June 1, 2013. The Crown has told the jury that the Twin Maggies rammed Boudreau's boat three times in the harbour of Petit de Grat and that Joseph James Landry used a gaff to hook Boudreau, dragging him out to sea. Related Stories Craig Landry told the Nova Scotia Supreme Court on Tuesday that he did not actually see Joseph James Landry use a gaff to hook Boudreau, and that he did not watch as the Twin Maggies ran over Boudreau's boat three times, though he heard three thuds. Defence lawyer Luke Craggs asked Craig Landry whether he was concern

For soft shell clams, scallops and oysters The Shellfish Commission revisited its decision to change the opening of the Great Salt Pond for scalloping from November first to December first at the meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The change, which takes place this year, was challenged by a member of the public at the Commission’s last meeting in October. Vice Chair Hermann “Bo” Gempp, who was chairing the meeting, put it succinctly: “We were right. They’re still spawning,” explaining that he had opened six scallops to see what they were up to. “The water is warmer this year,” said Commissioner Jon Grant. “We knew it would be a bone of contention,” added Commissioner Joe Fallon. Gempp felt that there were only a few people who were upset with the change and he told the group that he had been emphasizing to those people that they would have an additional month in the spring to go scalloping. The Commission also discussed the opening of Cormorant Cove to soft shell clamming on De

Atlantic City's Eloy Otero holds the 57.2-pound striped bass that he caught Sunday in the back bay of Atlantic City. Catino earns the Best Catch Division prize of a $100 gift certificate from The Press Fishing Contest presenting sponsor TackleDirect. Catino's catch blew away the old record of 17 pounds, 3 ounces caught in 2003 by   Paul Lowe   in Manahawkin Bay. Catino was fishing in the back bay from the public fishing park at the Longport Police Station on Oct. 14. Ray Scott's Dock in Margate certified it. It measured 29 inches in length with a 24 inch girth. This is the first year for the Best Catch category, and it was a super way to launch it. The story had another aspect to it: Catino lost his job at the Revel and used the time to get back into fishing. Another first for The Press Fishing Contest, is the launch of a Catch and Release division. To promote the release particularly of bigger fish, two $50 prizes were established. They go to   S
